Tier 1 IT support for the work that repeats

Tier 1 IT support is the first pass on a computer that is already in the office. Most of that work is PC setup, Windows installation, printer configuration, antivirus you already pay for, and Microsoft 365 onboarding so a new hire can open mail on Monday. The Wired Wizards runs that first line from a USA and global operations center, and splits it into L0 and L1. L0 is a written step a person can follow without a technician. L1 helpdesk services mean a technician doing those steps. Server design, firewall rules, and an outage nobody can explain are not this page. Those go to L2.

A senior engineer should not be booked to add Outlook. IT helpdesk support keeps that job on the first line. Tier 1 IT support is where the steps are already known.

What L0 and L1 include

IT helpdesk support at this level is a known list, not an open investigation. If the steps are not on the list, the ticket should move.

  • PC setup for a hire who already has the hardware, including the account rules you approved and the applications on your standard list.
  • Windows installation when a PC is new, or when it is being rebuilt from an image you already use.
  • Printer configuration on a workstation, and the queue that only one person can see.
  • Antivirus or endpoint software your company already pays for, installed and set to update.
  • Microsoft 365 onboarding: mailbox, desktop apps, and sign-in. The license choice stays with you.

Level 1 technical helps stops when the steps are no longer standard. A printer that needs a new cable run is on-site dispatch. Moving mail for the whole company is a project. A firewall change is L2. L1 helpdesk services stay on the known list: PC setup, Windows installation, printer configuration, and Microsoft 365 onboarding.

How a first-line ticket moves

  1. The request names the person, the device, and the start date if this is a new hire.
  2. L0 is a written step the user can follow, such as enrolling multi-factor authentication. If the step needs an administrator password, it is not L0.
  3. Level 1 technical support does the standard setup on a remote session, or on site when the hardware is still in a box.
  4. The user confirms that mail, files, and the business application open.
  5. If the standard fix fails, the ticket moves to L2 with the notes still attached, instead of being guessed at for another hour.

A new hire, done properly

Send the name, the start date, the manager, and the license you bought. Microsoft 365 onboarding creates the account, opens mail and files, and stops. We do not add the person to every shared site because they might need it later. That is how a receptionist ends up with finance folders.

PC setup follows your list. If you do not have a list, the first piece of work is writing one: browser, mail, the line-of-business application, and VPN if you use one. A laptop loaded with whatever the technician prefers becomes next month’s ticket.

Windows installation uses your image, or a clean install plus that list. We will not wipe a machine that may still hold the only copy of a spreadsheet. Ask the user before anything is erased. Printer configuration is the same idea: connect the queue the office already uses, and leave a new cable run for dispatch.

Where the first line should say no

Request L0 or L1 Someone else
Printer configuration for a printer the office already uses Yes A new cable drop is dispatch
Install the antivirus you already license Yes Choosing a new security product is a project
Outlook will not open for one person Yes Mail down for everyone is L2 or break-fix
Make the Wi-Fi faster No That is design work, not a setup ticket

L1 helpdesk services should be allowed to decline a vague request. If every complaint lands on IT helpdesk helps, the new-hire laptop waits behind an argument about Wi-Fi. When the same printer configuration breaks every Monday, stop resetting it. Write down the repeat and hand the notes upward. The cause may be a driver, a print server, or a printer that is dying. That repeat is still tier 1 IT helps until the notes show it is not.

What you still decide

Who may approve a new account. Which shared mailboxes a role receives. Whether a departed employee is disabled the same day. Tier 1 IT support can carry out those choices the hour you make them. It should not invent them.

We can draft the Windows checks and the mail sign-in steps. A manager should be able to follow that page without calling us. IT helpdes helps can hand over that page. It should not invent a new access rule on the call.

Questions about the first line

What is tier 1 IT support?

It is the first line for routine work: PC setup, Windows installation, printer configuration, antivirus, and Microsoft 365 onboarding. L0 is a written answer. L1 is a technician doing that standard work. Deeper faults go to L2.

What is the difference between L0 and level 1 technical support?

L0 is a step a user can follow without a technician, such as a reset instruction you have approved. Level 1 technical help is a person doing the standard setup or fix, including PC setup and Windows installation. Both stop before server, firewall, and design work.

Does Microsoft 365 onboarding include choosing licenses?

We set up the mailbox, apps, and sign-in once you have chosen the license. Choosing what each role is allowed to see is your decision. We will not guess payroll access for a new hire.

Tier 1 IT support starts with a named person and a standard list, not a blank request to “look at the computer.”
